Naptember Instagram Photo Challenge

October 3, 2012 by Alisha 8 Comments

Greetings everyone!  Last month 3 ladies hosted an Instagram photo challenge.  The title for the month was “Naptember”.  It was a complete blast.  Below is a list of the pictures that we had to recreate for each day of September.

I had so much fun trying to think “outside the box” to come up with different ways of taking pictures of my hair.  I think my funniest one was the picture I took for day 3.  The topic was corner and I put my hair in the corner in “timeout” for misbehaving.  LOL  I also had a chance to connect with so many other naturals and learn about their journey and also got some great ideas for hairstyles.  The winner for Naptember was @mtamorphis.  She has an awesome head of hair and her pictures were fantastic.  Click HERE to get the full details on the story.  I was also very honored to have received an honorable mention.  Can’t wait to see what the ladies do for “Frotober”!

Finger Coils styled with Coco Curls Cream

October 2, 2012 by Alisha 4 Comments

Today’s hair of the day is also a review on a great new product that I had the pleasure of trying.  I was gifted this product for being a runner-up in a giveaway that All Things Curly had a few weeks ago.

This great product that I want to talk about is Coco Curls styling aid cream.  OMG this stuff is so awesome.  It has a nice creamy consistency and the smell is out of this world.  It’s like a sweet combination of vanilla, honey and creme brulee all rolled up together!

I was starting to get tired of doing the same ol’ wash-n-go or twist out, so I decided to revisit a style that I did a lot when I first BC’d (big chopped).  I washed and conditioned my hair then applied my Giovanni direct leave-in condition, massaged my scalp with my JBCO (Jamaican Black Castor Oil) then applied a small amount of natty moist all over my hair.

Next I took small sections of my hair to work with and applied the Coco Curls styling aid cream and finger coiled my hair.  I made sure that each section was damp before I applied the cream.  This makes it easy to help coil the hair.

Review: Bee Mine Deja’s Hair Milk

September 21, 2012 by Alisha 19 Comments

Hey Curlfriends!  It’s amazing all of the different types of products out there to deal with hair.  It’s enough to send a product junkie into a conniption!  For anyone that is newly natural, one of the biggest obstacles that you will face is which products will work best for YOUR hair type.  I’m not one to try and base everything on a chart, but a lot of times not all hair products are created equally.  The picture below is a good example of the different types of hair:

A few months ago I had the pleasure of working with Tawanna of All Things Curly.  She was such a pleasure to work with and helped me find a great product to style my youngest daughter’s hair.  Morgan has several textures throughout her hair and she ranges from a 2b-3a.  Tawanna suggested that we try Bee Mine Deja’s Hair Milk.  The texture is nice and light (like a body lotion) and has a very pleasant scent.

I washed Morgan’s hair then applied Giovanni Direct Leave-In Conditioner throughout her hair.  Once I detangled her hair I parted it into 4 sections then applied about a quarter size of the hair milk in each section.  I then took my Denman brush and brushed to work it through.  As I was doing her hair, I also rewet lightly with my spray bottle since then made it easier to apply the product and brush her hair.  The results were great and her hair was nice and shiny but not greasy.  I’ve tried this product in my hair and it was definitely a no-go for me.  I would say that this works better for the 2-3s.  My hair (4a-4c) requires more moisture and a heavier creamy type product.  Check out the awesome results she got.

So how do you style your little diva’s hair?  I’m so tired of doing 1-2 ponytails or just slapping a head band on her head.  Feel free to share your favorite and easy styles.

Homemade Flaxseed Gel

March 13, 2012 by Alisha Leave a Comment

Sometimes you just need to leave well enough alone… LOL

So I decided to try and make my own flax seed gel.  #FAIL
The recipe I used was:
1/2c of flax seeds
2 cups of distilled water
*a few drops of essential oil (optional)

What the?!?!

Once you boil your mixture, you will start to see the water congeal.  After boiling for about 5 minutes, remove the mixture and use a strainer or thin pantyhose.  The seeds are really tiny so a colander won’t work and don’t be like me and use tights.  (Let’s just say I did a lot of squeezing for a tiny bit of gel!)Then add a few drops of your favorite essential oil, mix and you are done!   It’s best to refrigerate the mixture and it’s good for about a week.

Now let’s rewind back to why I feel this turned out to be a fail for me.  ——–>  I think my first mistake was using too many seeds.  After checking out other recipes a lot of people used 2 tbs-1/4 cup.  My second mistake was using a pair of old tights.  They don’t make it easy to try to squeeze the gel out.  And my third and final mistake was thinking I was some sort of kitchen scientist.  I’m going to leave all of these homemade concoctions to the “professionals” and go back to studying up on my natural hair topics.

All that work and this is it?!?!

Do you have anything that you tried to make and it turned out to be more of a headache?  Feel free to share the love!  LOL

P.S.  I can’t believe I forgot to share of pic of how the gel worked on my hair!  Actually worked great just a lot of work trying to get that gel.  😀
