Prairie Wear Compression Bras

June 2, 2024 by Alisha Leave a Comment

*This is a sponsored post. All opinions are my own.*

In January my yearly mammogram came back showing calcifications that looked “suspicious”and they had me come back for a follow up appointment. Calcifications are completely normal for people that have dense breast tissue. After a diagnostic screening and needle biopsy, I was diagnosed with Ductal Carcinoma in Situ (DCIS) high grade. With a history of breast cancer on both sides of my family, I decided to opt for a double mastectomy with reconstructive surgery to minimize the risk of the cancer coming back.

On  ⁣⁣April 8th I had my double mastectomy and the first thing that place you in after surgery are compression garments. These medical devices are a lifesaver for breast cancer as they help prevent lymphedema. The risk of developing lymphedema in the breast is higher for individuals who have undergone breast cancer treatment. This is because the surgical removal of lymph nodes can disrupt the lymphatic system, leading to a buildup of fluid in the affected area. Radiation therapy can also increase the risk of lymphedema, as it can damage the lymphatic vessels and impede the flow of lymphatic fluid.  Compression bras are designed to provide graduated compression, which means that the pressure increases as you move further down the bra. This helps to promote blood flow and reduce swelling in the affected area. By wearing a compression bra regularly, breast cancer survivors can reduce their risk of developing lymphedema and alleviate symptoms such as pain, swelling, and discomfort.

Prior to my surgery I met with a staff person at Pretty in Pink Boutique. The staff was amazing and helped me find the best bra for my needs. Simple and easy to fit with just one measurement. Take a circumference measurement under your arm and above your breast. Initially I was fitted for the HuggerPRIMA and picked out pink and black. These were perfect for my recovery during those first 6 weeks. It provided high-compression, high-coverage with maximum comfort and security. It’s comfortable and durable.  The hooks at the shoulder made it very easy to put on and off immediately post-surgery.

With summer coming I realized I wanted something closer to the bras I wore prior to surgery. I reached out to Prairie Wear and they sent me the HuggerVIDA. This felt so much better after having high-compression! It offered medium compression and was perfect for the 2nd stage of my recovery. Also I’m basically wearing the bra 24/7 as advised by my plastic surgery team. It feels just like a regular bra but I feel a lot freer because there’s less compression.

Also every component of their Huggers has antibacterial yarn, is made from materials that are tested and certified as safe for direct skin contact. My skin is very sensitive and I broke out from the adhesive that was used to keep the drain tubes in place as well as the heart monitor tabs after surgery. Since I’ve been wearing the Huggers I haven’t had any issues and I sweat a lot! Those night sweats are no joke and I’ve washed AND dried my bras several times and they still look brand new.

And because our bodies go through a lot during recovery Prairie Wear also makes an extender. It’s great for individuals who want to adjust the compression of their Hugger bra. They’re perfect for those who need compression 24/7 but require a bit more space for sleeping, warm weather, or to accommodate swelling, bandages, or compression padding. And it saves you money from purchasing a new bra.

As I continue on my journey of recovery and healing, I’m grateful for the support of my bras from Prairie Wear. Whether you’re just starting your own recovery journey or looking for a comfortable and supportive option for everyday wear, I highly recommend giving these bras a try. With their high-quality materials and innovative designs, you’ll be well on your way to feeling confident and comfortable in your own skin. So go ahead, take a step towards recovery and self-love with Prairie Wear – your body (and mind) will thank you!

Learning About Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)

May 3, 2023 by Alisha Leave a Comment

Post supported by @ameracadpeds @CDC. Opinions are my own.

Learning about (ACEs) has impacted my parenting conversations. One important thing that research shows is that ACEs can be prevented, and the impact mitigated, when you provide kids with strong relationships, positive experiences, and safe spaces.

Over the last few years I have discussed the importance of finding three sources of support (e.g., family friends, pediatrician, family organization) to prevent ACEs. Why? Because we all have the potential to be someone else’s source of support.

I have had several conversations with my daughter about the importance of finding trusted adult relationships—that it is a really good thing to expand the circle of supportive resources and caring relationships outside of the home. We have also talked about the importance of listening to her gut and feeling comfortable and safe with her choices. These conversations have been really important for us.

I am grateful that my daughter has identified one of my good friends as a trusted adult. She was able to discuss what was bothering her and my friend was able to provide a listening ear and also bridge the communication gap so that my daughter felt comfortable enough coming to me when she was ready. Our relationship, and her network of trusted relationships, has grown stronger as a result.

By providing kids with strong relationships, positive experiences, and safe spaces we can help kids reach their full potential and be part of the solution to prevent ACEs.

5 Ways to Get Your Deck or Patio Ready for Summer

Warm weather means that we are all wanting to spend more time outdoors. There is no place to enjoy this new sunshine then relaxing on your deck. Your deck can be a safe place to unwind outdoors, especially after a cold winter that we can have! Of course, after a long cold fall, your deck might not be looking the best. However, there are a few quick steps to get your deck looking good as new again and some won’t even take you a long time to either!

Cleaning: The first thing you’ll want to do for your new summer project is clean the area. Start by taking all your furniture off your deck so you have a better idea of what you are working with. Depending on what your deck looks like, there might be a few tips on how much of a small or deep clean you need to do. If your deck just has a few debris around it, you might need to do a light cleaning. Some of that debris just needs a good sweeping. If you compost, it’s the perfect time to add some organic matter to your compost pile. Once you have all the debris swept off, take out your garden hose and give your deck a quick wash down. If your deck really took a beating, you’ll want to do a better cleaning such as getting a powerful pressure washer that can really help get rid of the dirt and grim.  [Read more…]
