Calling Me White Isn’t a Compliment. Here’s Why!

March 7, 2016 by Alisha 23 Comments

You are the -whitest- Black girl I know.

If I had a dollar for EVERY TIME someone said that to me…hell I could retire and live quite comfortably! And each time it’s been said I’ve been caught off guard and either laughed it off or walked away.  I seriously need to work on a comeback.

The term “microaggression” was used by Columbia professor Derald Sue to refer to “brief and commonplace daily verbal, behavioral, or environmental indignities, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative racial slights and insults toward people of color.” Sue borrowed the term from psychiatrist Dr. Chester Pierce who coined the term in the ’70s.

My good friend Michellle (who is also Black) of Divas with a Purpose and I were discussing this and she brought up such a good point.  Whenever the term of saying that you act white was used it was “the ultimate dis by the black kids and a badge of honor by the white ones.”  Can you imagine being in 4th grade and another student telling you “I don’t know why you try to act so white when you’re so black!” That was over 30 years ago and I can still remember that. Welcome to Wine’ing Momma!!!

March 2, 2016 by Alisha 14 Comments

First off…welcome!!!  Thank you all so much for joining me today as Wine’ing Momma makes her debut!  This has been a long time coming and I’m so happy that my new look and name have finally happened!  Now it wasn’t easy and there were many days along the way that I was looking like the image below!  But I survived!!!  Thank gawd for wine!  LOL

I kept thinking about how I wanted it to look and what type of vibe I wanted to give to all my fun readers. There are so many “experts” out there in social media and after a while I swear they all started to sound like the adults on Charlie Brown.  Do this…don’t do that… -_- [Read more…]

As I inch closer and closer to my mid-40s (lawd) I realize that I can’t just “hope” that I’ll lose those pounds quick or “think” hard enough that it will actually happen.  Y’all I have to actually get up and move and be active…when did this happen!  Seriously though, as we age sometimes it gets a bit harder to keep the weight off or lose weight as quickly as we did in our younger years.  Of course when I want to workout (at home or walking around the neighborhood) I still want to be cute and there is nothing worse than having the perfect outfit ruined.  Depend® Silhouette® Active Fit* Briefs for Women allow you to wear any outfit you’d like, during any part of the day, without any worries. The Non-Crafty Way to Set Up for the Big Game

There are a lot of things that I think that I’m good at.  I think I’m pretty good at making people laugh, fairly decent at nail art and can make one hella spinach and cheese Quiche.  Outside of that…I don’t have one crafty bone in my body.  And I sure as heck am not the best cook.

Now for someone who loves to entertain and party as much as me, you would think I’d figure out a way to decorate my house like something straight out of pinterest.  I mean I have thousands of pins dedicated just to being crafty and what not!  But alas I just can’t pull it off.  What I can do though is buy some delicious food and a few decorations and make it look like I put W A Y more effort into than I really did!

If you’re like me and you struggle with trying to keep up with the Martha Stewart’s of the world, than you’ve come to the right place!  The Big Game is just around the corner and I’ll help you get ready so that all of the football fans (and their fur babies) will feel right at home.

To make the party a success all you need is food and drinks!  It’s that simple.  I started off by going to my local Sam”s Club to get the food.  They have this amazing Pizza Family Combo deal that is only $13.98!  It includes a large 16″ pizza (cheese, supreme or 3 meats), cheese sticks, 1/2 dozen of cookies and a 2-liter of Coca-Cola.  I wanted to add a little “green” to the party meal so I also picked up one of Sam’s Club’s delicious salads.
