Spring Chick Nail Art

March 17, 2016 by Alisha 15 Comments

A little Spring Chick nail art to celebrate that Easter is just around the corner!

I was inspired by the nice warm weather to paint something Springy.  And of course I found this idea on Pinterest.   I love the yellow, white polka dots and little baby chick.  It’s the perfect mix for Easter and Spring!

The brand was NK nail enamel that I picked up at my local beauty supply store for about $1.  I was so happy when I finally found a yellow polish that was opaque enough that I wouldn’t have to use  a white polish as the base coat.  And the best part was the price!  I think beauty supply stores actually have some of the best colors around and it’s always fun to find a new brand that you might not find otherwise.

Hello Kitty Nail Art

March 14, 2016 by Alisha 19 Comments

If you haven’t figured out by now I like to pretend that I have these mad nail art skillz and can draw anything…LOL!  I love doing nail art inspired by cartoons and movies.  Did you check out my version of Mike Wazowski from Monster’s Inc?

This week’s inspiration for my Hello Kitty nail art was found on Instagram!  I don’t know why I continue to punish myself by trying to recreate these things, but I’m just a glutton for punishment.  The Instagram user that I became obsessed found this week is @tweetiisweetii.  When you get the time please go and check her out.  Her nail art is flawless and fierce!  While mine is meek and whimsical…LMAO!!!

Last month Coca Cola unveiled their uniquely designed one of a kind Diet Coke bottles named “It’s Mine” at Kroger stores all over the country.  The bottles were displayed on an end cap just before you get to all of the other sodas.  Diet Coke fans will love these new bottles and cans because each one looks like an original piece of artwork. For a limited time, you can find these select colorful patterns on 12-oz glass bottles, aluminum bottles, mini cans and 6-pack ½ liters.  What’s even cooler is that no two designs are alike.

These new innovative packaging designs were created in partnership with HP, which automated millions of unique graphics based on 36 primary designs. The patterns were inspired by the “bubbles, fizz, taste and spirit” of Diet Coke. [Read more…]

Calling Me White Isn’t a Compliment. Here’s Why!

March 7, 2016 by Alisha 23 Comments

You are the -whitest- Black girl I know.

If I had a dollar for EVERY TIME someone said that to me…hell I could retire and live quite comfortably! And each time it’s been said I’ve been caught off guard and either laughed it off or walked away.  I seriously need to work on a comeback.

The term “microaggression” was used by Columbia professor Derald Sue to refer to “brief and commonplace daily verbal, behavioral, or environmental indignities, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative racial slights and insults toward people of color.” Sue borrowed the term from psychiatrist Dr. Chester Pierce who coined the term in the ’70s.

My good friend Michellle (who is also Black) of Divas with a Purpose and I were discussing this and she brought up such a good point.  Whenever the term of saying that you act white was used it was “the ultimate dis by the black kids and a badge of honor by the white ones.”  Can you imagine being in 4th grade and another student telling you “I don’t know why you try to act so white when you’re so black!” That was over 30 years ago and I can still remember that.
