Faux Hawk – Natural Hair

September 30, 2012 by Alisha 6 Comments

Hey curlfriends!  Welcome to my first “Hair of the Day” post!  If you don’t already follow me on INSTAGRAM then you probably have been missing my HOTD pictures.  I love how the natural hair community is flooded with so many curlies that share their wealth of information regarding taking care of and styling natural hair.  I’ve met so many great people and have had the opportunity to help others along the way.  I appreciate all of my followers and thank you all for being so supportive during this new and exciting chapter of my life.   Today’s style is my version of an up-do.  Since my hair is still in the TWA (teeny weeny afro) stage, I’m a bit limited on some styles.  I flat twisted the sides and back going up toward the crown.  I 2-strand twisted the top then left them in for a few day.  I then untwisted the top and viola!  Love how this turned out and it’s a great protective style since I’m not manipulating my hair every day.

Since I’m not comfortable trying to be a vlogger on YouTube, I plan to work on editorial pics on how to do the hairstyles.  Be sure to stay tuned for more HOTD posts!

Review: Bee Mine Deja’s Hair Milk

September 21, 2012 by Alisha 19 Comments

Hey Curlfriends!  It’s amazing all of the different types of products out there to deal with hair.  It’s enough to send a product junkie into a conniption!  For anyone that is newly natural, one of the biggest obstacles that you will face is which products will work best for YOUR hair type.  I’m not one to try and base everything on a chart, but a lot of times not all hair products are created equally.  The picture below is a good example of the different types of hair:

A few months ago I had the pleasure of working with Tawanna of All Things Curly.  She was such a pleasure to work with and helped me find a great product to style my youngest daughter’s hair.  Morgan has several textures throughout her hair and she ranges from a 2b-3a.  Tawanna suggested that we try Bee Mine Deja’s Hair Milk.  The texture is nice and light (like a body lotion) and has a very pleasant scent.

I washed Morgan’s hair then applied Giovanni Direct Leave-In Conditioner throughout her hair.  Once I detangled her hair I parted it into 4 sections then applied about a quarter size of the hair milk in each section.  I then took my Denman brush and brushed to work it through.  As I was doing her hair, I also rewet lightly with my spray bottle since then made it easier to apply the product and brush her hair.  The results were great and her hair was nice and shiny but not greasy.  I’ve tried this product in my hair and it was definitely a no-go for me.  I would say that this works better for the 2-3s.  My hair (4a-4c) requires more moisture and a heavier creamy type product.  Check out the awesome results she got.

So how do you style your little diva’s hair?  I’m so tired of doing 1-2 ponytails or just slapping a head band on her head.  Feel free to share your favorite and easy styles.

Our natural hair journey

August 29, 2012 by Alisha 2 Comments

Wow how the time has flown since my Big Chop (BC)!  This isn’t my first time down this road, but it is the first time that I decided to make a conscious effort to be a good role model now that I have 2 daughters.

Over the years, my oldest daughter always wanted to wear her hair straight just like mommy.  I would give in and let her get it flat ironed so she could let it swing in the wind.  Then a few years ago, I made the mistake of letting her get a “kiddie perm”.  I know this was bad, but I figured this would make her hair easier to manage and it wouldn’t be such a hassle for our daily hair routine.  Boy was I wrong.  During the Summer she got her hair relaxed, she wanted to wear it in one ponytail most days.  This caused a lot of damage around her hairline and also around her “kitchen” (lol).  It got so bad at one point that I asked her if she cut her hair to try and get bangs.  O_o

So that brings us to where we are today.  I knew that I couldn’t very well tell my daughter that she needed to enjoy her curls if I kept on running to get mine relaxed and wear it bone straight.  So last Fall I got some kinky twist and wore them for 3 months then went and got mine chopped.  I ended up getting another mini BC this past February and haven’t even thought about getting it relaxed.  Today everyone in the house is 100% natural and our hair is thriving.  I took my oldest daughter for her BC this past spring break while we were on vacation in Orlando.  I had been trying to build her up for the big day and told her she could get a bit of pink in the front so she would still feel girly.  Her relaxed ends were limp, dry and damaged and the next step to getting her hair healthy was to cut that mess off.  She loves her hair so much more now, but still has those days where she wishes it was longer and the same texture as her little sister.  But I told her as long as she takes care of herself from the inside out her hair will thrive and be long in no time.
