Do you know your status?

December 2, 2013 by Alisha 9 Comments

Sunday, December 1st marked the 25th anniversary of World AIDS day.  HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, has become one of the world’s most serious health and development challenges:

  • 33.4 million are currently living with HIV/AIDS.
  • More than 25 million people have died of AIDS worldwide since the first cases were reported in 1981.
  • In 2008, 2 million people died due to HIV/AIDS, and another 2.7 million were newly infected.
  • While cases have been reported in all regions of the world, almost all those living with HIV (97%) reside in low- and middle-income countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa.
  • According to the World Health Organization (WHO), most people living with HIV or at risk for HIV do not have access to prevention, care, and treatment, and there is still no cure.
  • The HIV epidemic not only affects the health of individuals, it impacts households, communities, and the development and economic growth of nations. Many of the countries hardest hit by HIV also suffer from other infectious diseases, food insecurity, and other serious problems.
  • Despite these challenges, there have been successes and promising signs. New global efforts have been mounted to address the epidemic, particularly in the last decade. Prevention has helped to reduce HIV prevalence rates in a small but growing number of countries and new HIV infections are believed to be on the decline. In addition, the number of people with HIV receiving treatment in resource poor countries has increased 10-fold since 2002, reaching an estimated 4 million by 2008.

Overview compiled with information from WHO , USAID and Kaiser Family Foundation .

Texture Tuesday | Politics of Hair: “Good” hair & the Black Community

November 26, 2013 by Alisha 23 Comments

Today’s post is from guest Blogger Moe from Chasing Moe.  She is one of my favorite bloggers and always says what a lot of people are thinking, but are too afraid to say it.  “Chasing Moe is about introspection, emotional cleansing….and being my raw, unfiltered self…in a blogosphere full of niche, cliche, and painted veils.” Please be sure to check out Moe’s blog for more “raw, unfiltered” posts.

Growing up, I never thought my hair was any better than anyone else’s. I had ponytails with barrettes to match my outfit like everyone else. It wasn’t until a girl named Ebony decided to cut my hair in 6th grade because ‘I had good hair, and it’ll grow back fast’, that I ever TRULY realized how much some people within the black community felt about hair in general.

Scandal Wine Glasses

November 13, 2013 by Alisha 15 Comments

What day is it?!?!  Hump Daaayyy!  Every Thursday from 9-10pm CST I’m in my own little happy world watching Scandal.  Everyone and EVERYTHING must stop talking during this hour.  LOL  The main character Olivia Pope is a huge lover of wine.  Every since I saw her wine glasses, I knew I had to track them down!  They are the most beautiful piece of stemware I’ve every laid my eyes on.  And to top it off…one of the glasses come in 23oz.  Brought a tear to my eye.  HAHAHA  Ok I’m sure I wouldn’t actually drink 23oz of wine in one sitting, but just knowing if I wanted to makes me pretty darn happy.  Check out the glasses.

MANICure Monday | Owl Always Love Nail Art

November 11, 2013 by Alisha 22 Comments

Happy Monday!  This past weekend I put on one of my Origami Owl parties for a good friend.  Origami Owl is a fun way to build your own locket that can be changed out as often as you like. Every locket is unique and tells YOUR story.  So what better way to get ready for the party than to do a little nail art to show just how much I love being a Designer Consultant for Origami Owl.  I initially did all of my nails with base coat Essie in Miss Fancy Pants.  But after day one about 3 of the nails chipped…ugh!  But the nails with the art on them were still in great condition so I decided to go with something bolder for the other nails!  I used China Glaze.  I’ve gotten so many compliments with that color!
