Homemade Flaxseed Gel

March 13, 2012 by Alisha Leave a Comment

Sometimes you just need to leave well enough alone… LOL

So I decided to try and make my own flax seed gel.  #FAIL
The recipe I used was:
1/2c of flax seeds
2 cups of distilled water
*a few drops of essential oil (optional)

What the?!?!

Once you boil your mixture, you will start to see the water congeal.  After boiling for about 5 minutes, remove the mixture and use a strainer or thin pantyhose.  The seeds are really tiny so a colander won’t work and don’t be like me and use tights.  (Let’s just say I did a lot of squeezing for a tiny bit of gel!)Then add a few drops of your favorite essential oil, mix and you are done!   It’s best to refrigerate the mixture and it’s good for about a week.

Now let’s rewind back to why I feel this turned out to be a fail for me.  ——–>  I think my first mistake was using too many seeds.  After checking out other recipes a lot of people used 2 tbs-1/4 cup.  My second mistake was using a pair of old tights.  They don’t make it easy to try to squeeze the gel out.  And my third and final mistake was thinking I was some sort of kitchen scientist.  I’m going to leave all of these homemade concoctions to the “professionals” and go back to studying up on my natural hair topics.

All that work and this is it?!?!

Do you have anything that you tried to make and it turned out to be more of a headache?  Feel free to share the love!  LOL

P.S.  I can’t believe I forgot to share of pic of how the gel worked on my hair!  Actually worked great just a lot of work trying to get that gel.  😀

Game Night with Hedbanz

March 2, 2012 by Alisha Leave a Comment

Game night with “The Lamps”!  So all this week it’s just been my oldest daughter and me hanging out.  After much pleading and whining, I broke down and bought the Hedbanz game.  This game is so much fun!

Playing Hedbanz is simple. After dealing one card and three chips to each player, take your card and place it in your adjustable headband without peeking. When your turn arrives, ask each player a question about who, or what, you are (“Am I a food?”). If you get stuck, the sample questions card offers tips on the types of questions you might ask.

“Mimi” and I with are game faces!

When you get a yes, your questions will become more specific (“Am I cooked?” or “Did Dad serve me for dinner last night?”) until you’re ready to guess the answer (“I am spaghetti!”). For each identity you guess correctly, you’ll discard one of your chips. If you give up, you’ll collect a chip from the chip bank and be dealt a new card. The first player to get rid of all her chips is the Hedbanz winner.

I have a new love in my life!

February 22, 2012 by Alisha Leave a Comment

I am in LOVE! Ok… you know how people say something works well and you watch the infomercials and you think, “That stuff is just for show and won’t work like that in real life!” Well bareMinerals has proved me wrong. My skin is glowing and looks flawless. I picked up the starter kit at Ulta and couldn’t be more pleased with my results. My hubby even said my skinned looked nice and I looked like a chocolate kiss…LOL

It’s so much fun experimenting with makeup but I really wish I could get eye makeup to look like it does when I hit the MAC counter. I’ve watched countless videos on YouTube and I always strike out. Can somebody please come and help a sista out?!?! haha

What is your favorite kind of makeup? What tips do you have to get that runway look for your eye makeup? Please feel free to share!

Preparing myself for Spring!

February 17, 2012 by Alisha 2 Comments

Spring is such a great time of year. Flowers begin to bloom, the days get longer, and my allergies go into rare form! LOL

Last November I wrote about doing my Big Chop. After 3 months of growing out my TWA I decided to get my first trim. That was mistake #1. I made an appointment to have it done at the Paul Mitchell School since they do the most O’mazing scalp massages. That was mistake #2. My oldest daughter also needed a trim and deep conditioning and thought what better way to spend the afternoon. That was mistake #3. To make a long story short, let’s just say my almost 3 inches of kinky, coily hair was reduced back to about 1/2 inch. But in the spirit of being a good mother and not going all Sh’Qwan (my alter ego) on the student, I embraced my cut and hummed to myself, “I am not my hair…”

So here we are a month shy of Spring. I’m ready to begin my hair journey again and this time around I have the pleasure of sharing my story with THE KINK. I am so excited and honored to help others in this area of their life. It’s pretty amazing how something as simple as hair can have such an impact on one’s life. Since parting ways with the “creamy crack” I’ve also been looking at other ways in my life to be healthier and a better role model for my girls.

One of my biggest influences right now on living a more holistic lifestyle is Dominique of ALL THINGS O’NATURAL. She is such a positive person and has a no-nonsense approach to her business. I was so happy when I came across her fan page on facebook. In the beginning of my journey I was at a loss for what to do with my TWA. Dom makes some awesome products and her customer service is top notch. Please be sure to check out her website for all the yummy smelling items that she whips up herself. —–> ATON products.

Well last but least…my allergies! Please pray for a sistah because Mother Nature is playing a cruel trick on my nose. I’m sneezing like it’s just straight up Spring time outside. And let’s not even mention that it’s mid-February and 60 one day then 35+ the next. O_o

Take care and remember life is too short to not enjoy the little things!
