Hey my peeps! OMG can you all believe that I did not cut Sybil at all last year. This means I won a bet with my friend Racheal and she now owes me drinks…winning! Last year I did a self-imposed challenge that I would go one full year without cutting my hair. Did you read about the challenge?
This time last year I was rocking a fierce brush cut. My head was freezing but I was fierce! LOL December of 2013 was when I decided to give Sybil a fresh start and I loved it!
And here we are today and I’m still amazed that I let my hair grow and didn’t chop her off during the year! Now keep in mind this is my before picture so I’m looking crazy as a ****!
LAWD do y’all see all that “wisdom” around my hairline?!?! That is just wrong, especially since I’m 25. *wink wink* My hair grew just over 4 inches during the year which is pretty much average (about 1/4 inch each month).
I’ve never been one to shy away from experimenting with hair color so I was super happy when I learned that Madison Reed provided everything you need to color your hair at home. I’ve been covering all those wisdom hairs for years, but for me the grays sometimes want to retaliate and not color. I thought I’d give Madison Reed the benefit of the doubt to see if they would be able to cover them. I chose the color Firenze Brown which I put over an earlier reddish-brown color that I already had on my hair.
One thing that I absolutely loved about their system is that everything you need is included. They give you 2 pairs of awesome gloves (not that flimsy clear stuff that rips easily) along with a cap, cream to prep around your hairline and ears and also a wipe to clean up any color that got on your skin. And there was no horrible ammonia smell which is always a plus when using products like this. To top it all off those dreaded grays are gone…they are now blondish brown…but they are gone! Yyyyyyaaaassss! I may or may not have been feeling myself just a bit on these after pictures.
I got it flat ironed last week, but I was itching to see my coils and even happier that I didn’t have any heat damage *phew*. I got about 4 inches cut off the nape area because I was so tired of the afro mullet shape that was going on with Sybil.
Have you tried Madison Reed before? If so please share your impression of it and what color you used! If you haven’t tried it and would love to check out more about Madison Reed, you can even have a consultation with one of the color advisors to help you pick the perfect color!
Linking up this week with the gorgeous Dani of OK, Dani!

Thank you! Sybil was just a swingin’ in the wind!
Cherese says
Alisha, I blame you for making me want to color my hair now, thanks a lot! I love the shape of your cut, too!
Coily Locks says
Just like me blaming you when I wanted to cut my hair after you did last year LOL Thanks and I’m hoping the vitamins I’m taking help the top grow faster.
ericka says
Girrrrrl! I just love the shine on Miss Sybil. She looks great flat ironed. Im trying to let mine grow (yeah right!) I’ll probably cut this weekend. I love the color too. Where can we find this brand?
Coily Locks says
Ericka I’ve a few links scattered in the post and you can check out the site. I just love how they have everything you need in the box and as long as you are trying to dye your hair no more than 1 shade (lighter or darker) its perfect!
Mimi says
I’m so tired of these thug grays I have. Nothing seems to properly cover them. May have to give this a whirl to see what it can do.
Coily Locks says
Mimi not thug grays! LOL I hit those grays up first when I was coloring and it did the trick. Now of course they seem to grow at the speed of light and I’m sure they’ll be peaking out in the next few weeks. -_-
Vashti (veepeejay.com) says
Look at Sybil showing out! lol How dare these wisdom hair try to creep up on your 25 year old hairline?! Hmmpphh..I’m annoyed for you! LOL. Love the new color Alisha.
Coily Locks says
Vashti they are beyond disrespectful! But at least they’ll be hidden for a minute before the new ones start sprouting all over my head…LOL!
Antionette Blake says
Wow, your hair is beautiful – curly and straight!!!!
Coily Locks says
Thanks so much Antionette! I can’t believe how long it is when straight. That shrinkage is no joke…LOL!
Tia says
Your hair looks so pretty and shiny! I love it straight but your curls have always been so pretty. Love that color too!
Coily Locks says
Tia the guy at the Paul Mitchell school did an excellent job and I grilled him like crazy about heat protectant. LOL And even after just blow drying Sybil was just a swingin’ in the wind. And at least the grays are gone for now. 😀
Sevi says
Thank you for stopping by my blog! A few things, I absolutely love that you are Team Natural and have named your cute coils Sybil. I look forward to keeping up with your blog and life!
Coily Locks says
Hey Sevi! You are more than welcome and thank you too for stopping by! The only way I can keep up with all my fav bloggers is bloglovin LOL And I’m still on the hunt for a cute B&W striped skirt! Sybil said hey too!!! *waves like a crazy lady* 😉
Angelic Sinova says
Congrats on making it one year without cutting your hair! I LOVE how it looks, so worth that year of not cutting it. It looks great <3
Coily Locks says
Thanks! Hoping to make it another year but just letting the top grow now. 😉
Samantha Angell says
The new hair color looks great on you! I am a blonde, so only do my hair in the salon to prevent as much damage as possible.
Coily Locks says
I def understand. I tried bleaching my hair once…big mistake. I’ll stick with leaving that to the professionals. LOL
Rena McDaniel says
I love your writing style you are hilarious! I like the flatiron style but like you I know it causes alot of damage so I don’t do it to often myself. I really love the new color. It’s about time for me to cover my “wisdom” up myself!
Coily Locks says
Thanks Rena! And just think I hadn’t even had wine when I posted that…LOL! And I swear those little grays are slowly trying to peep out around near my ear, how dare they! I swear they grow faster than the speed of sound or is that speed of light???
Echo says
I have not tried Madison Reed, but you always rock your hair in the best way possible! I absolutely love it and am glad you won the bet!
Coily Locks says
Echo I’m going to try and keep letting it grow but keep the back and sides more tapered…wonder how long that will last? LOL
XmasDolly says
I was typing a comment where did it go? Darn… I’m having the worst luck tonite. Anyway I followed all your social networks you have there at the top of your side bar so guess we’re buds now! lol I sure hope you’ll stop by me when you get a chance too. Have a rockin’ week. Hugs… Marie aka XmasDolly
Local Adventurer (Las Vegas Blog) says
i love the curls! 🙂 i haven’t gotten my hair colored in ages. i think i’m way too lazy to do the upkeep anymore.. and sometimes it will take lots of split ends for me to want to do something with my hair. i do miss having colored hair though. 🙂
Coily Locks says
Thanks! Everyone now and then I say I’ll embrace those dreaded grays but today is not the day! LOL
Sam says
I have used Madison Reed recently. I used Sicily Blond, I think. It is actually pretty similar to my natural color, but I used it to restore the color to the ends which were bleached from summer. I really like how they send everything and provide a lot of support.
Coily Locks says
That’s the best part and the supplies they send are salon quality which makes it even better.
Courtney says
Just love your hair!!!! Totally fabulous :):) this reminds me that I have to do my hair sometime soon…. I have some roots going on -_-
Coily Locks says
“roots going on…” LOL I feel your pain and thank you!
Lauren says
your hair looks amazing no matter how you style it! I am sorta jealous haha! xoxo
Coily Locks says
Thanks Lauren! Sybil has been having lately…LOL
vidya sudarsan says
I have not heard of Madison reed – your hair look awesome! I like straight hair just because mine is wavy 🙂
Coily Locks says
Thanks Vidya! I love the straight for a different look but way too much work for me…lol. I like to keep things nice and simple. Which they greys would realize that and stay away…haha
Louida says
Wow Sybil has gone straight! I love it! Girl, you had me rollin’ reading your post (wisdom around the hairline and turning 25) *dead*!!!!!!!! I have never heard of this hair product before, I actually never colored my hair because I’m too afraid to do it.
Coily Locks says
Your hair color is naturally gorgeous! I’ve been coloring mine since high school! So who knows how long I’ve actually been turning gray…smh! But you know since I”m 25 and all that would just make it about 7 years -_- haha
Alysia from My Domestic Dish says
Hahaha I love this review- why, on earth, do you call your hair Sybil?? 😛
Because you think it’s crazy? My Dad used to call my sis and I that during our teen years so that’s my only association lol
I love your coily locks. Gorgeous and natural.
I followed you… more than anything, your disclaimer at the bottom had me sold. Love it and I love finding bloggers with personality too! Pleased to “meet” you.
Alisha says
Alysia I’m cracking up that your dad called y’all Sybil! LMAO Yep my hair is hella crazy and has split personalities with these 3 different textures. And love your blog too! Your “about me” me was just like I was reading my life story…haha
Tatanisha says
This is PERFECT for me. I did the big chop almost 2 years ago. I have let it grow out, then cut it again. However, I have major issues with grey hair in the front. Thank you for the review, I am going to check this out. I need something a little stronger than what I have been using! I love your hair BTW!
Alisha says
Tatanisha, I’m the worst at growing my hair! It actually grows pretty good but something about being drastic and chopping it all off that I just love…LOL! And why are greys so stubborn anyway…just so disrespectful. lol
Penny Struebig says
Love the straight hair — but I also love the curls!! You’re so lucky to be able to have both. I envy you to be able to go that long without a cut.
Alisha says
Thank you! I def loved switching it up every now and then and the color really popped when it was straight. Can’t wait to try it out again in a month or two!
Moe Simon says
Girl you can rock it either way! I love the color too. I tried color once years ago but my cousin did it at her school (Paul Mitchell). It was nice and I’m thinking about getting another color but I need to get in the habit of taking better care of this head first. I’m just now getting with the hot oil treatments smh.
Chrissy Mazzocchi says
I love your hair and Madison Reed! You look absolutely gorgeous!
Coily Locks says
Thank you so much Chrissy! 😀
Debbie D says
Loved this article! I am actually waiting on my first delivery of the Madison Reed product and was hoping to find some reviews on the product. Your hair looks great! Now I’m excited to try it. Thanks!
Coily Locks says
That’s awesome Debbie! I am the queen of coloring my hair and this was by far the best “box” at-home system I’ve ever used. Their customer service is great and it comes in this box like a present…LOL! Enjoy and hope you have great results as well!
lynette says
Love your hair and blog!Keep doing it!Thanks for your great sharing!
Coily Locks says
Thanks so much Lynette! Let me know if you decide to give it a try!
