*I was provided with product for review. All opinions are my own.*
I’ve been natural this go around for over 7 years! And during this time I’ve probably tried just about every product none to man. Thankfully I’ve finally mastered what works good for me! Can I get a curly girl AMEN! Even my 16yo has mastered her holy grail list of products to maintain her curls. Which leads us to the youngest, crazy curly girl in our household.
Morgan has the thickest and curliest hair out of the three of us. What makes it even crazier is that due to us all having different textures and lengths, none of the same products work the same on us. Morgan’s biggest issues are maintaining moisture and frizz control. Now that she’s getting older sometimes she wants to wear her hair out and all I’m envisioning is my baby walking around looking like she got into a fight with humidity and it won!
When Formulate contacted me about doing on a review on their customized shampoo and conditioner I was a bit skeptical. First I wanted to make sure that it could be used on all hair textures because I’m lucky enough to have a very diverse group of readers and 2nd I was concerned about the price. But we’ll get to that part at the end!
Formulate is personalized haircare products perfectly engineered for you! You complete a questionnaire describing your hair type, struggles, goals, geographic location…and that’s just to name a few! The shampoo and conditioner are made in a lab with you in mind. For Morgan I had 5 major goals in mind:
- Anti-frizz
- Hydration
- Manageability
- Curl Definition
- Deep Conditioning
The ingredients aren’t listed on the bottle but they are listed on the brochure that comes with each individualized order. All of the formulations are sulfate free, paraben free, dye free, preservative free and cruelty free! The top 3 that were selected to personalize Morgan’s products were:
- Vitamin E – known for its antioxidant properties it helps reduce free radical damage and protect the hair and scalp.
- Broccoli Seed Oil – excellent source of Vitamins C & K.
- Polyquaternium-37 – this is an anit-static agent that coats the hair and enhances body and increases volume
Just like with any shampoo you want to make sure and focus on the entire scalp and not just the top. I only had to use 4-5 pumps and it lathered up great! After I rinsed that out I combed the condition through and left it on for a while with a plastic cap then rinsed with cold water to close the cuticles. Detangling and styling was a breeze and we even tried out a wash and go and Morgan’s hair held up great! The shine and moisture retention were awesome! And the best part is that there was minimal frizzing! Typically when we do a wash & go it ends up being a big Wash & NO! LOL The first pic is after I rinsed out the conditioner, the second is a close up of those juicy coils and the third one is her shrinkage! No one ever believes me when I say she has a ton of hair on her hair and that’s why I ball up in cry in a corner on wash days. LOL But this time wash day was a breeze and I kept my sanity in check!
Last week we used these products when she went to get her hair straightened and to my surprise with all of this crazy weather her hair has stayed straight and shiny! Her hair has been straight for almost 2 weeks now and this had made Winter break a breeze! I mean she’s almost got whiplash from swinging her hair back and forth but throwing it in a ponytail takes like 3 seconds.
Now for the cost! If you’re a product junkie or one who typically spends more on hair care products then the cost won’t be a factor at all. Both the shampoo and condition come in 14oz for $49 or you can try out a sample of 4 oz each for $19. I’ve spent $15-$20 on an 8oz bottle of shampoo for natural hair so getting both for $25 each isn’t a bad deal especially when you factor in that they are personalized to meet your hair goals and needs.

My hair is acting crazier as I get older which is why I’m about to shave it off! Luckily this worked great on Morgan’s hair…LOL! Good luck!

I would love to try this for RJ’s hair. It’s extremely dry with 3 different curl patterns. I’ve tried so many products to hydrate his curls and nothing works.
