Can I make it a year without cutting my fro?

January 23, 2014 by Alisha 26 Comments

I can not believe that it’s been over 2 years since I did my BIG CHOP!  I initially did my big chop to be a support system for my tween since her hair was becoming damaged from having it flat ironed all the time and that one time I let her get a kiddie perm.  Well here we are today and my hair is even shorter than it was 2 years ago.  o_O

My natural hair journey has been full of high and lows, but I wouldn’t trade any of it!  I have learned so much about myself and made friends all over the world.  Who would have thought that something as simple as “hair” would have that much of an impact on people.  Now during these 2 years I also learned that my hair is crazy as hell.  No really, “she’s” crazy!  And by SHE I mean…Sybil!  Oh, you don’t know about her?  Well click here to get the full story.

Ok now that you’re up to speed with Sybil and I, let’s take a little trip down memory lane *cue music and fade scene*

On 11/15/11 I did my big chop after having braids in my hair for about 2 months.  I didn’t really plan on going natural again (this wasn’t my first time at the rodeo), but i knew I wanted something different and I’ve never been afraid about cutting my hair off.  My first short cut actually came after I ended up burning off a curl using my college roommate’s curling iron.  I went to refresh a curl and that bad boy fell straight to the floor.  If you could have seen the look on my face!  And this was just before TLC hit the scene so there I was with my pixie cut and side burns looking hella fly!  Even dyed it a golden brownish blonde.  You couldn’t tell me nothing!

After a year of nurturing Sybil, I decided to treat myself to a day of beauty and get my hair flat ironed (December 2012).  Sybil was just a swinging in the wind.  Once again, you couldn’t tell me nothing!  But then I went to wash my hair and *dun dun dduuuuunnnn* ugh, heat damage!  My entire crown was damn near straight!  That part of my hair is much finer and plenty of people gave me suggestions on how to salvage it but once it’s damaged from heat, there’s no turning back.  I didn’t want to just twist it all the time for it to end up straight and I didn’t care much for the shape it had once it had been trimmed, so here comes big chop #2!  And after that there was no keeping scissors from my head.  Heck there was no keep clippers from my head.  SMH

It’s been about a month since I had my last hair cut and I am making a vow to not cut for the next year!  I’m going to need all the support because in about 2-3 months my hair is gonna start looking crazy as hell and I’m going to be feening like a junkie to get it cut off.  So I need all of my readers to be my support system to help keep me strong.  Anyone else out there struggling with this?  If so PLEASE let me know and we can support one another as well…LOL!

Just in case you forgot how awesome Sybil can be, here are a few pictures to help motivate me to stay away from scissors.

My brush cut December 2013, hopefully the last cut!

So er uh looking at that brush cut sure makes me want to cut it again but I’ll be strong!  LOL  I’ll be updating each month on my progress and showing pictures along the way.  It’s so much easier this time since I know what works and won’t have to waste time and money on products that just make Sybil go postal!  Stay tuned for next month’s growth update!

I want to cut mine off! The longer it gets the more maintenance it requires and I just don’t have the time anymore. I have been contemplating cutting mine and I know for sure I would end up cutting it off regularly because that is what I did when I was getting it flat ironed.

See Rhachelle that’s the ONLY thing I’m dreading about growing it back out. All that dang retwisting at night and time spent styling it. Take me like 30 seconds now…haha!

Wow. I did not know your full journey. It all makes sense now. It told you last year to be nice to Sybil. LOL. I love the pic with your coils. How is your tween’s hair now? I think you can go a year.

Pascha my tween’s hair is actually so much longer and healthier now. I just wish she would actually style it more. She is straight wash-n-go! I’ve been dying to do a 2-strand twistout but she hates how they look. Oh well! I’ll try to be nicer to Sybil this year!

Good luck! I cut mine off last summer because washing and styling was taking too much of my time and I’d never experienced the big chop before. Now, I don’t know if I want to cut it all off again, let it grow our or get braids or twists. I’m approaching the awkward grow out stage so I need to make some decisions.

The awkward stage is what I’m dreading Jenni! But now I’ve got some bets with a few friends so I gotta stick this one out! lol

It seems as though you have hard time staying away from scissors/ clippers but I’m a supportive person, so what the heck … YOU CAN DO IT! Better yet, I challenge you to do it! Good luck. Travion’s mom by the way.
